Shanghai:CARBINE Pavilion at CIFF
In recent years, liminal space—brought into focus by the imagery of the “Backrooms” in film and internet culture—generally refers to a transitional zone between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the certain and the uncertain. It is made up of elements people know well from everyday spaces, yet it feels unfamiliar because its organizing logic lies entirely beyond everyday experience.
This “counter-intuitive” spatial experience is precisely what the Yikai team wants to present to the audience of this exhibition. For Yikai, liminal space is not a visual style to be faithfully reproduced, but a method of organizing viewing and experience: through turns in the path, blank spaces in the scene, and the suspension of function, viewers are momentarily released from their habitual judgments about the living room, dining room, or bedroom, and are led to feel the relationship between furniture and space anew.
